Editorial Policy

Effective Date: August 23, 2026

Here’s how content on HonestGun.com gets made, and what we hold ourselves to.

Who We Are

HonestGun.com is written from the perspective of a real, everyday gun owner — not a licensed instructor, attorney, or industry insider. We started this Site because the process of buying a first firearm can feel confusing and intimidating, and we wanted to make it more straightforward. See our Disclaimer for what that does and doesn’t qualify us to say.

How We Research and Write

  • Articles start from real questions first-time buyers actually have, combined with our own experience and research.
  • We may use AI tools to help draft, outline, or speed up parts of the writing process. Every article is reviewed and edited by us before publishing — AI assistance doesn’t replace our own judgment or fact-checking.
  • For anything involving specific legal requirements (background checks, state law, permitting, etc.), we try to link to primary/official sources — state government sites, the ATF, or similar — rather than asking you to take our word for it.
  • We do not publish sponsored content designed to look like independent editorial. Any paid or sponsored content will be clearly labeled as such.

Affiliate Relationships and Editorial Independence

We participate in affiliate programs (see our Affiliate Disclosure), but affiliate relationships don’t determine what we recommend. Product mentions reflect our own research and opinions, and we may recommend products we have no financial relationship with.

Accuracy and Corrections

Firearm laws change, and so does our understanding. If you spot something that’s outdated, unclear, or wrong, we want to fix it. Email us at legal@honestgun.com with the article link and what you think should change, and we’ll review it. Substantive corrections will be noted on the relevant article.

What This Isn’t

Nothing on this Site is legal, safety, or professional advice — see our full Disclaimer for details.
